Google Business Profile Checklist for Local Trades
Published November 3, 2026
Your Google Business Profile is the primary tool customers use to find your phone number, read your reviews, and request service. Keeping your profile complete and accurate ensures Google presents your business when local homeowners search for your trade.
Here is a practical, detailed checklist of every setting you should review and maintain on your listing to maximize local map pack visibility and customer conversions.
1. Core business information and identity
- Exact business name: Use your real legal or registered trade name. Do not stuff keywords or city names into your business title, as Google guidelines strictly prohibit keyword stuffing and may suspend your listing. If your business is called "Maple Street Plumbing", do not write "Maple Street Plumbing - Emergency Drain Cleaning Kitsilano".
- Primary category selection: Choose the single category that best describes your core trade (for example, "Plumber", "Electrician", or "HVAC contractor"). Google gives the primary category the highest weight in search rankings.
- Secondary categories: Add secondary categories for specialized services you offer (such as "Drainage service" or "Heating contractor"). Add only categories that represent distinct lines of business you regularly perform.
- Physical address or Service Area: If customers visit your shop or office, display your physical address. If you dispatch vans to customers' homes, set your business as a Service Area Business and specify the towns and postal codes you serve. Setting your service area accurately prevents Google from flagging your listing for false location representation.
- Direct phone number: Use a local phone number with your area code rather than an unlisted toll-free number whenever possible. Local area codes reinforce geographic relevance in your municipal market.
2. Operating hours and holiday schedules
- Regular weekly hours: Set your exact opening and closing hours for every day of the week. Inaccurate hours frustrate prospective clients who arrive or call during closed periods.
- Special hours for holidays: Enter holiday hours well in advance of statutory holidays. When customers see "Holiday hours confirmed by business", they are far more likely to call, knowing someone is available to answer.
- 24-hour emergency service: Only select 24/7 hours if a real technician is on call and available to answer the phone at night. Marking your business open 24 hours without answering incoming calls triggers customer complaints and negative feedback.
3. Services and product catalog
- Individual service items: Build out individual service listings under your categories (such as "Water heater installation", "Sewer camera inspection", or "Electrical panel upgrades").
- Plain service descriptions: Write short, clear descriptions explaining what each service includes. Avoid promotional slogans and explain the technical work simply so homeowners understand what to expect during a service visit.
- Pricing transparency: Include diagnostic pricing or hourly rates if you offer fixed fees. Transparent pricing builds confidence before the initial appointment.
4. Photos and real job evidence
- Exterior and interior photos: Upload photos showing your building, branded work vans, and equipment. High-resolution images of your vehicles help customers recognize your crew when they arrive on site.
- Recent project photos: Add two to four photos every month showing completed projects, work in progress, or team members on site. Regular photo additions demonstrate that your company is actively completing work in the local area.
- Avoid stock photography: Google's automated systems detect and remove stock photos. Real, unedited photos taken on a smartphone build significantly higher customer trust and improve user engagement metrics on Google Maps.
5. Reviews, generation velocity and public responses
- Ask every customer: Request a Google review after completing each job. Send the same direct link to every client without filtering by customer sentiment. Consistent review velocity over time is one of the strongest prominence signals in local map ranking algorithms.
- Respond to all reviews promptly: Thank customers for positive reviews, mentioning the specific work completed and the neighbourhood. Acknowledge negative feedback calmly and invite the customer to call your direct line to resolve the issue. Avoid arguing or sharing customer details in public review responses.
6. Weekly updates and seasonal offers
- Publish updates regularly: Post an update once a week sharing a seasonal maintenance tip, holiday hours reminder, or project highlight. Regular posts keep your listing active and signal to Google that your business information is current.
- Google offers: When offering seasonal discounts, use the official Offer post format with clear start and end dates. Offer badges appear prominently on mobile maps and capture attention from customers actively browsing options.
7. Attributes and accessibility details
- Ownership and identity attributes: Select relevant attributes such as veteran-owned, family-owned, or women-owned if applicable.
- Service options: Confirm whether you offer onsite services or online consultations. Accurate attributes help Google match your listing to voice searches and mobile filter criteria.
What remains uncertain
Google updates its local ranking algorithms regularly. While completing every item on this checklist ensures Google has full, accurate information about your business, map pack positions depend on customer proximity, review velocity, and competitor density in your specific market.
